Horror Editorial Review
**** "After Midnight" emerges as a unique blend of dark comedy and horror, earning praise as an underrated gem despite some notable drawbacks. The film thrives on its intricate dialogue and character-driven narrative, set against the backdrop of a struggling bar owner's life in rural Georgia. The protagonist, Hank, played by Jeremy Gardner, grapples with the sudden disappearance of his girlfriend, Abby, while facing nightly disturbances from a mysterious monster outside his home. The plot unfolds with unexpected twists, eschewing the traditional horror formula in favor of a more nuanced character drama. Filmmakers employ strikingly long takes and minimal cuts, enhancing the authenticity of conversations between characters, which many viewers found compelling. However, while the writing shines, the acting teeters on the edge of amateurish, with some performances failing to resonate as strongly as the story’s ambitions might warrant. Viewers noted that while the horror elements exist, they are primarily used to support deeper themes of love, loss, and regret, rather than deliver traditional scares. The movie also benefits from atmospheric music that stitches together its emotional and melancholic undertones, providing a refreshing departure from the nihilism often found in contemporary horror films. For audiences who appreciate a movie that leans heavily into character exploration and dialogue, "After Midnight" is a worthwhile watch. Yet, it may not appeal to those strictly seeking conventional horror thrills. **
